President Obama, Your Legacy Clock Is Ticking
It's been over a year since Americans elected Barack Obama, but we're still living in George Bush's world – two wars, a recession, a deficit, and so much more.
President Obama has his hands full cleaning up these messes and establishing a legacy on healthcare and climate change. I get that. But there's one blind spot that he can't afford to ignore any longer.
We're living under the rule of George Bush's judges. He picked over 40% of all current federal judges. We're talking about lifetime appointees, and so few cases ever make it to the Supreme Court that they usually get the last word.
Bush's judicial legacy didn't happen by accident, or overnight. He made it a priority. The numbers are telling: as Obama approaches the end of his first year, he’s picked roughly 30 nominees, 11 of whom have been confirmed. By the end of his first year, Bush had nominated 65, and nearly 30 had been confirmed.
To be sure, Republicans have been obstructing Obama's nominees at every turn – that's why so few have been confirmed. But Obama has played into their hands by not nominating more people, which would throw their obstruction into sharp relief and amp up pressure on the GOP.
I know it might not seem this way – in the midst of the healthcare fight – but Obama's legacy, the future of progressive legislation, and the well-being of our nation depend on the character, and quantity, of the judges he nominates. This issue deserves equal billing with the others at the very top of the administration's agenda.
The good news is that, unlike with many problems we face, Obama can ramp up nominations without sacrificing progress on his other priorities. There is no shortage of highly qualified – and progressive – nominees, and Senate Democrats can crush judicial filibusters when they set their mind to it.
The bottom line is that Obama may never have another opportunity like the present, with 60 Democrats in the Senate, to push through his nominees and return some balance to the judicial branch. And he has only four or so months before the 2010 election season causes the Senate to grind to a halt.
President Obama, your legacy clock is ticking. We need you to act now.

unvarnished.

The fact you had to ask shows you already know the answer.
Nominees and the number of nominees isn't a horse race.
Still, all things being equal . . .
Bush didn't have anything else to do in his first 9 months except vacation.
Obama has been busier with bigger problems to solve and bigger issues to address. If you go by just the numbers.

Let's just go ahead and assess them as such that way we save typing it over and over in the future.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
But I thought the general consensus was that he was trying to do too much too fast. So now he's not doing enough fast enough? I don't know whether to shake my pompoms or drink the Kool Aid.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
For some it really is both.
Doing too much when it is anything they don't like and doing far too little if it is something they do want.

The man hasn't even been in office for a year yet, and you're already worrying about his legacy? Just how fast do you think he can fix things anyway? I'm already pissed off enough arguing with neo-cons who whine about Obama not having fixed the WOT, the economy, and everything else by now(one MFer wrote a Rant "I've given the bastard 10 months!" asking why Obama hasn't sent more troops to Afganistan) http://boards.adultswim.com/adultswim/board/m..., I sure didn't expect to some here and read the same sort of crap.

you guys need a new excuse, it is the "direction" not the "duration" of Obama's policies liberals are having issues with.
He also told me that "you want a pony" and "...but but he did not promise that in his extremely vague electoral promissory notes" are also not that impressive arguments when justifying the actions of an administration.
Cheers, just passing the message along btw.
"You guys"? And just what fucking excuse you think I'm using? I meant exactly what I said. Obama hasn't been in office long enough for any of you fools to whine about what "direction" he's going or the "duration" of anything. You don't know what he'll come up with in the months ahead, and to say you're disappointed in what "direction" doesn't mean he won't change his "direction". Hell, even BUSH didn't get this kind of fucking flack from all sides this early in his presidentcy!
I getting fed up with coming here to see people upset that they aren't the President. If you want those things run for office already. He is keeping his word and working hard. If that is his legacy that should be good enough. It is almost as if you expected another emperor.
Obama is not a progressive he is a corporate centrist, I knew that all along. He does owe progressives something for voting for him, but unfortunately it seems he got more money from corporate interests than average voters. He does hide the fact he sold out well, so this clip is all the more revealing.

Speak for yourself there Mr or Ms Boilinabag. I listened to his campaign speeches and knew exactly who I was voting for. He never promised to shut off the war in Afghanistan, instead he said he would focus on that war and like it or not, that's what he's doing.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
I doesn't matter how many people President Obama nominates, the Republicans will just keep putting their "anonymous holds" on them for no other reason but to obstruct the Democratic President. That's all they live for apparently!
Just focus on what the alternative was, and you won't bitch as much about the man.
But vision can be impaired by excessive outdoor living, ME dust storms, and credit headache.
I was never comfortable with O. He was too religious for my tastes. Not that I though Hillary was great, but he's the one that got the nomination.
don't you understand? Wait, you don't. You worked in television. I haven't watched it for years. That's why when I call the Senator from Lousisina a whore it is different than when Beck does. Because he is on TV. Which I never watch. Because it is copropately controlled and because I am intelligent.

Nothing the man did turned out. Not Harken Energy, not the Texas Rangers baseball team, not his stint as Governor, not his presidency. Everything he touched turned to shit, and like the frat boy he is, he smeared it around all over the place with a big grin.
"Let's see 'em clean THAT up!"
Makes anecdotes about missing 'W' keys seem like small peanuts.
The Lieutenant Governor's position is the seat of power in Texas rather than the Gov. Other wise, Texas, while screwed by Bush, would be in even worse shape.
was our Governor we had a bipolar addict and an Aggie cheerleader as Lt. Governor.

better than the Chimp.
We all knew bush's track record when he was placed in the oval office and we knew when he left he would leave the place a mess. Sure enough when he said the future president would have to be the one to finish the wars we knew this was going to be one more time when he would shit all over the floor and expect someone else to do the dirty work of cleaning it up. President Obama comes into this mess and all we hear is that he's not cleaning it up fast enough. Of course there are those others who say he's cleaning it up too fast. Apparently they like the aroma.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
. . they know what they are doing when it comes to stealing huge sums of money.
nobody, as far as i can tell, is being held accountable for any of the various acts of war crimes, melting down wall street, watching a city drown, etc.
they just get a permanent seat as a political "expert" on cable tv.
i want to see some justice.
Incoming administrations typically ask all the US Attorneys to resign at the beginning of the term. The new President can then assign new US Attorneys to fill the slots.
All of Bush's appointments are still in place. These are the attorneys that were willing to do Dubya's dirty work, like setting up Don Siegelman on trumped up charges and throwing him in jail.
The ones that weren't willing to politicize the Justice Department were thrown out by Bush and Rove.
they can destroy him if they choose they now control 70% of the Nations Capital.
That's the sad truth.
Do you have a link to that info or is it just something you heard someone say on teevee?

apparently no one get's it.
let me give you a clue. . people on the inside work 24/7 to take your money. You may not notice it but you will eventually.

I have yet to see any real progressive legislation move through the houses since the stimulus. Dems are now siding with rethugs to block any "progressive" legislation. How about the new "progressive" war now owned solely by the King of Change. I'm sorry, but even with a super majority of "progressives" this center-right country has barely budged an inch to the left.

I think (hope) you'll see a vigorous effort early next year to fill these positions.
..isn't the only one that's ticking..
Yours is as well..
but I'll always this team is waaaaay better than the alternative...
That being said, all I can do is pray.
NOBODY 2012
it is just, that as a nation, it is about damn time we start raising our standards.
Ok. I have one question.
Just exactly, what did you expect?
1st Presidential debate
2nd Presidential debate.
3rd Presidential debate.
What did people expect? Didn't anyone actually listen to what was being said?
Maybe people were just so stoked to see an alternative to Bush, that they just got wrapped up in the moment.
Even I payed attention, people.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
People need their Dennis the K fix.

To do it themselves.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
have little to do with "surprise" or lack there of. And I am pretty sure you knew that.
I knew who and what he was/is.
That's why I called HRC and BO two peas in a pod during the primaries.
The thing that surprises me is, this disdain for Obama.
What? Didn't anyone pay attention to the debates?
He said everything that he would do.
It's all there.
Why are so many people shocked?
I think people were so tired of the Bush antics that they misinterpreted what Obama was saying.
They were just so stoked to see any chance at change.
That they just didn't pay that close of attention.
I've never been under the illusion that this man would bring in sweeping changes right away . Not even since the primaries. As you know, he wasn't my 1st or my 2nd choice.
But at the end of the primaries, I said I'd support the nominee. Whom ever it was. Before Obama I was in HRC's camp.
There is no difference between the two.
My wife and I started off with Edwards.
Then we went to HRC.
It was a good political battle those two put up.
Obama came out on top.
Now? I'd like to see Sanders/Kisunich.
But until this all changes hands. I'll support this Prez.
I said I would. And I'm going to keep my word.
I certainly won't agree with everything he does.
But I won't throw him under the bus either.
All people have to do is go back and watch the debates.
It's all there.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
Bush was a putz.., but he was decisive and not lazy. And say what you want, but Obama walks the same path.
which is why he spent his early adult years avoiding active military service, reserve military service, trying to get into schools he was unqualified for, then schools his family ties could get him into, then businesses friends and relative could invest in as tax shelters until he realized he could be sold like a commodity due to his Daddy's name. He was decisive and not lazy all right. A real motivating role model.

Yeah, if you're a whore . . . . .
you can say that about the vacation prezdent with a straight face?
HahahahahahahahaaHAHAHAhaahaHAHaHaHaHAhahahahahahaHAHAHahahah.
I have a bridge to sell you in the Iraq desert.
Really? I musta have missed that.
that you think Obama has any interest in putting progressives on the bench...
"To be sure, Republicans have been obstructing Obama's nominees at every turn – that's why so few have been confirmed."
11 out of 30= 37%
Almost 30 so I'm going to be lazy and go with 29 instead of looking it up.
29 out of 65=45%
Not that much of a difference, so Bush had so few confirmed also?
Obama's legacy is done. Stick a fork in it.
How many campaign promises does he have left to break?
that he did not promise this. He did talk about "finishing the job" whatever that means.
So you will see that for the most part, Mr. Obama hasn't broken that many campaign promises. The issues are that if you revisit Mr. Obama's campaign programme... it really is kind of vague in a lot of details. I thought it was due to the constraints associated with electoral campaigns. But now it looks hand wavy nature was intended to provide plenty of plausible deniability.
Mr. Obama's apologists will be technically correct when they remind you he did not promise peace or real health care reform, etc. The kicker to me, it is that the apologists are then admitting that we can't expect Mr. Obama to do the right thing, simply because he did not promise to do the right thing.
This was my last straw with Mr. Obama. Not because of campaign promises, or his piss poor track record so far (from a liberal standpoint). But rather, I am just tired of seeing Mr. Obama selectively boldly defending and standing by policies which are guaranteed to alienate liberals, while at the same time he has shown himself to be rather timid and overly compromising when it comes to back policies which may impose the slightest distress to the conservative spectrum.
I am sad to see that he is following the same DLC playbook as Clinton. Maybe Mr. Emmanuel is getting the encore performance he always dreamt of?
It's all in the debates. All of it.
I really don't like that term. It's dishonest. And yes I get the gist of the remark.
What surprises me is that so many people misread this man.
That really surprises me.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
I am going with the Merriam Webster's definition of the word.
I never agreed with him when he talked in the debates about this crap either. Unless you mean to imply, that if a president does something he discussed in a presidential debate... then he is free of criticisms. Then Bush said and did plenty of stuff he talked about in his debates. I guess I should have kept my mouth shut then too? He was after all doing exactly what he had told he was going to do....
That's to be expected. He has contradicted him self in those debates on a few occasions.
But, by in large, he has been true to his word.
I didn't agree with everything he said during the primaries and during the debates.
My point is, people should have expected all of this.
This new found shock is (how shall I put this)...crazy.
I knew what he was all about back then.
The thing the gets me is the lack of comprehension from what he said during that time period.
I'm not surprised or shocked in the least.
Now, and for the last 6-10 months people are just blown away by what he says and does.
He told everyone up front what he was going to do.
It's all in the debates. In both the primary debates and the Presidential debates.
Considering the alternative. I think he's still not all that bad. Do I like some of the things he's done? No
But it's not like I didn't have a warning.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
about the "shock" it is you. Red herring arguments are not the most honest line of discussion BTW.
I did not agree when he said it way back when, and I do not agree with him doing it now.
However, what I vividly remember is that when we were pointing that out, we were told to STFU. To give the feller some time, wait and see. We were going to be "wowed" how he would always come through and do "the right thing" even though he was saying the opposite of "the right thing." It was all an act in his masterful 3D chess skills.
Well, we waited... and indeed it sucks as much as we told it was going to suck. But now we're supposed to STFU because he already told us?
So far all I am seeing from the Obama apologists are all sorts of excuses, and attempts at deflecting the debate no matter what. I wonder if the diehard 20%ers that supported Bush through thick and thin followed a similar MO in their devolution...
I've purposely ignored this Obama bitchfest until now. The truth is people like you Sampson, Tyree and others were criticizing the man last November...well before he took office!
But of course, disagreeing with your analysis automatically qualifies me to be a cheerleader, apologist, kool-aid drinker...
"This was my last straw with Mr. Obama."
Hilarious.
Hardly. It's all in the debates .
Now, it looks like the shoe is on the other foot.
Now ,if anyone who doesn't bash Obama, is now called an apologist.
The red herring is comparing Obama to Bush.
Which I see more and more of nowadays .
And if being willing to give the man some time to clean up Bush's mess. Is being some kind of troll or whatever. Then I guess that's what I am.
Washington moves at a snails pace. On a good day.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
