Newt Gingrich confirms that he's running for President in 2012 because you know he would never backtrack from a statement like this:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday he shouldn't have called Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor a racist, but said he was still concerned that she would bring bias to her decisions.

In a letter to supporters, the Georgia Republican said that his words had been "perhaps too strong and direct" last week when he called Sotomayor a reverse "racist," based on a 2001 speech in which she said she hoped the rulings of a "wise Latina" would be better than those of a white male without similar experiences. Gingrich's remarks created a furor among Sotomayor's backers and caused problems for GOP figures who have been pushing to bring more diversity to the party.

Gingrich conceded that Sotomayor's rulings have "shown more caution and moderation" than her speeches and writings, but he said the 2001 comments "reveal a betrayal of a fundamental principle of the American system -- that everyone is equal before the law."

Sotomayor, 54, would be the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the high court.

He still won't put her words in context and when that is done, her words are not a betrayal. But he still acts a like a jerk when he calls her a radical:

So the question we need to ask ourselves in considering Judge Sotomayor's confirmation is this: Which judge will show up on the Supreme Court, the radical from her speeches or the convention liberal from her rulings?”

UPDATE:

Rush reacts to Newt's backtracking on Sotomayor "racist" charge: "I'm not retracting it."

LIMBAUGH: Have my words been too strong on Sotomayor? Are you asking me because Newt has retracted his -- no, my words have not been too strong. I just heard right before the program started. I didn't have a chance to do a lot of show prep late because of the Hannity interview, so I -- after the interview, I checked my email, and three members of the state-run media has sent me emails wanting my reaction to Newt's retraction of calling Sotomayor a racist, and I didn't know that he had, and I didn't know why he had retracted it, and I still don't. But -- what did he say? Why did he retract it? Did he say that he thought the word was too harsh or -- well, I have my own theory about what Newt's doing, but since I'm not doing it, I'm not going to comment.

I'm not retracting it. Nobody's refuted it. You know, they're out there saying, "It's too harsh. It's distracting, Rush. I mean, it's calling -- you know, you just don't want to use the word." Why? If the word means something -- words mean things -- and if it fits, I use it. Now, they may say, "Don't say it, Rush. Dial it back a little bit." But nobody's saying I'm wrong. Nobody's saying I'm making it up. I mean, when she says she'd do a better job than a white guy, what is it? It's racism, reverse racism, whatever, but it's still racism. She would bring a form of racism, bigotry to the court.

Welcome back to the world C&L. I missed you this morning.

Has Judge Sotomayer been called a radical Muslim yet or is that next? I saw a poll this morning telling which repub is favored for 2012. Huckabee was number one then Palin, then I think Newt and lastly Jeb. Newt's got some work to do if he wants to catch up with the most famous squirrel fryer in the country.

Of course she's a Muslim. She's also a lesbian. Haven't you heard the news? Drudge report has PROOF that Obama is a Muslim. He wouldn't appoint any judge that wasn't Muslim and brown and of course all the success in her life is due to affirmative action.

Good luck with that run to the White House Newty. Sorry a Latina gets your tighty whities in such a bunch. Coward.

I'm still waiting to see Judge Sotomayor's birth certificate. I hear she was born in a foreign land. I think it was Puerto Rico. That sounds Muslim to me. Probably a radical part of that country too.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Puerto Rico is totally Muslim. AND they're all brown and shit.

And they talk funny too!
Gotta be Muslims for sure!

I just remembered something. The family who lives next door to me is from Puerto Rico. Funny, they aren't Muslim, they don't talk funny and they aren't radical. They must be a sleeper cell or something.

newt is very smart and very shrewd (in a monty burns type-a way)

thus, i find his mea culpa complete bullshit. he "meant" what he said, in that it was directed at the reichwing base, for their consumption and his gain. now, in a classic machiavellian triangulation, he is maneuvering himself for a more mainstream audience and getting extra mileage and news coverage for this faux-apology.

Backtracks?

You mean he can't even reach to between his toes?

Diabolus est Deus Inversus

Guess what, Newtie?

Everybody brings bias to their decisions. It's called "being human". Human beings can't help it. They can only make decisions based on their own experiences and learning.

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Newt doesn't quite understand the concept of "being human". Maybe he can help me better understand the concept of "being reptilian".

Standard operating procedure. Say something that makes your extremist base salivate. Then backtrack to make you more appealing to the more moderate. The extremists are still salivating and he comes out looking more diplomatic. It was all orchestrated.

that's it nothing more or less. gingrich is a master of negative/strategic linguistics. this is a strategy that continues. include the right wing extremists so they don't feel left out. this faction is essentially the republican militia.

He was a little subtle too. You could criticize him for backtracking, but he noted that Sotomayor backtracked on the use of some of her words as well. I think he came out with a few political points on this one. We should take him seriously as a foe.

Bless their white guy hearts they are scared to death. First the American people chose a black man over a white, and I mean a real real white to the point of being lily white, man for president. Then the American people, eighty some percent of them approve of a female Hispanic for Supreme Court Judge. What next? Will the new Santa Clause be a black homosexual? I can't imagine the fears they dream about at night.

this gives credence to a shadow govt thingy -- you know, someone more powerful than Drugbo, yanking his chain, saying "Calm the Hoi Polloi, or you'll fuck it up for us, goddammit!"

And the fact it's part of an MSNBC crawl, that it's somehow 'news' that Druggie El Drugbo has flippity flopped on this, it's a shitty shitty sign...

Since this pick won't actually change the make up of the court (a lib for a lib, hopefully), and Sotomayor isn't really all that objectionable despite her horrid empathy and probable pro-abortion support, AND the fact that probably can't stop her from being confirmed anyway, RNC realizes its counterproductive to blow whatever juice they have now.

If at some point in the future Obama has a chance to replace, one of the 5 reliably conservative judges, it'll make whats going on now look like a garden tea party with nice people in comparison. It'll be pure raging white hot insanity.

Uncle Joe Mccarthy's picture

overall they are moderate to conservative....which is why many on the left really dont like this pick

constituent's picture

i could be mistaken but i believe newt like palin will be set-up people for someone more of the moderate flavor. the (r)/RNC will keep the exteme right wing in the game with the following cheerleaders steele, palin, boss, newt, rove and then deliver romney as someone who can beat obama. although disappointed, the extreme right at least enough of them will vote romney. the extreme right is pushing back on this possibility but the reality is this may be the only way they get the oval office back. i just believe newt can't pull it off. he will do some polling/group studies to get an idea but i don't believe he can get elected. the (r) is boxed in if you will. they don't want to lose the extreme right members so they will throw them a tea party or two and tell them that liberals HATE them so they hate us. they will tell them we want to take their guns and bibles when it's NOT true. otherwise some of these people may come to their senses and vote (d). they are very concerned. that's why they want obama to fail. again experience BAD for their perceived good. that's the (r) thought process.

Too easy, don't answer.

I understand after calling Sotomayor a racist in the reverse (whatever that means) he might be able to support her if she is pro-life. So I guess we have a guy in Limbaugh who just might be persuaded to support a racist. He really has no clue does he?

EastCoastLefty62's picture

Newt Gingrich is part of that old Southern Strategy mentality and is a racist himself. Gingrich along with Frank Luntz have been into name calling since the early 1990's. Gingrich and Luntz came up with that list to refer to liberals and Democrats by, which were to incite more than anything else.

Gingrich like O'Reilly and the rest of the psychopaths on the right need to be marginalized. Gingrich met regularly while in office with the White Citizens Council, an offshoot of the KKK along with Trent Lott, John Ashcroft, and Bob Barr. They all penned articles for the very racist Southern Partisan Magazine which still holds Jefferson Davis, not Lincoln, in the highest regard.

The National Media has never, never, never called out the Republican Party for their close association with the White Citizens Council and writing articles in the neo-Nazi Southern Partisan Magazine.

Newt Gingrich and the rest of the racist right got their anti-tax message and movement together in respnse to the "Welfare State" and white people's resentment of blacks being able to take advantage of the same programs poor whites did during the era of Jim Crow. It was only when the U.S. started to desegregate that these anti-tax movements were accepted into the mainstream. But, it was rooted in racism. The entire right-wing movement in the GOP is rooted in bigotry, racism, homophobia, sexism, and religious superiority.

Gingrich is one of the leading spokesman for these bigots and racists.

It is time to take the gloves off and call these people by their proper names---which I did above, and understand who they actually associate with behind the facade of the TV cameras and newspaper articles which shields these people from their racist asscoiations and even group memberships.

When you hear the past lives of a Thomas Pickering or a Jeff Sessions being racists and having such racist views, do you actually think they changed, just because of their denials? I don't think so.

Why retract anything Rush?
After all how could a towering genius like you with 2 semesters of community college under his belt ever be wrong? You're sooooooooooo sharp your mouth emits statements even before your mind formulates actual ideas.

I'm not as afraid after 911, Muslims, terrorists, whatever... as much as I am of the GOP ever getting a foot hold in power ever again. They ran the country into the ground and have done Bin Laden's bidding.

Gingrich on kissing Cheney's ass a deflecting blame for 911 to Clinton: "Despite all the warnings we had in the 90's".

You mean like the "bin Laden determined to strike in the US" warning memo Bush got right before his month long August vacation?

911 happened on Cheney and Bush's watch and all the history re-visioning by scum-bag conservative liars and splinners like Gingrich won't change that fact.
