Judge Sonia Sotomayor confirmed to the Supreme Court: 68 to 31
By John Amato Thursday Aug 06, 2009 12:45pm(Video of Obama's announcement and nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor)
The NRA will not be happy, but Judge Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed today to be the first Latina on the Supreme Court. That's a beautiful thing. Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan will be rolling in their racism over this vote.
By a vote of 68 to 31, the Senate today confirmed Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court. People For the American Way Executive Vice President Marge Baker issued the following statement:
“The confirmation of Sotomayor is a historic step for the nation and a triumph of the American way. The efforts by the NRA and the far right to sabotage her nomination failed badly, with a large majority of Senators uniting to confirm her today. Those Senators will not regret their votes.
Talk Left has the vote count:
The vote was 68-31. In addition to all Democrats and Independents (with the exception of Ted Kennedy, still absent due to his health), 9 Republicans also voted in favor - Voinovich, Bond, Martinez, Alexander, Graham, Collins, Snowe, Gregg and Lugar.

One can be assured that Alito and Thomas are looking both ways before they cross the street now.
9 out of 39 republicans still have the smallest shred of integrity left to vote for a sensible centrist judge? That number seems high to me. What are Graham and Bond really up to - feigning "bipartisanship" or just hoping to keep their ammo dry?
Bond is retiring, I believe, so he doesn't have to answer to the crazies as much, so he can vote his conscience.
Sorry, you're going to have to back that up with some facts, or at least some links! ;)
Limbaugh: installed her . .
Buchanan: may as well give california . .
Limbaugh: back to the mexicans . .

You got a Puerto Rican woman on the court. Now stop pandering to the Clintonistas.
he's got no splainin' to do to you!
deprived of their right to have someone who sort of has their skin pigment on the court. Viva Estrada!
Good God man, she's a woman, not a hydrocarbon!
;)
she would have gotten more Republican votes, that's for sure.
there and then. Uh . . have I gone too far . . again?
Someone should...Fred never did.
Sonia, Ethyl, and Lucy. He is right about Fred though. Despite the high pockets and the loose shorts under them, he could never get the old count high enough to put Ethyl in the family way.
Oddly, Fred and Ethel slept in the same bed, while Ricky and Lucy had twin beds yet produced little Ricky.
just FYI, it's Ethel.
Separation breeds . . little Rickys, I guess. Ricky, could you weigh in on this?
mixing women in politics with petroleum products.
The Sarah Palin "feeding hungry markets" approach is best.
Titan will be the next Repug haven.
Charlie Crist who is now gov of florida and running for US senate from florida, said if he could vote he would vote against her. The guy running against him for that senate seat is a very conservative latino. Crist said he wouldn't vote for her because he wasn't sure about her attitude of keeping and bearing arms. I think Crist probably shot himself in the foot with his bear arms because I can't imagine any of the many many latinos down here being too happy about his attitude regarding Sotomayor.
Nothing he said during his campaign has anything to do with the way he governs. He acts like the Governorship was a consolation prize that he accepted until something better came along.
He makes a good Repug though, as he is all about self-promotion.
Plus he's deep deep deep in that ol' closet of
hershis.shelving?
on the handyman.
Crist hasn't done as much environmental damage to the state as I feared he would. During the presidential campaign when he went back on his word and said he would be for offshore drilling, that was the last straw. He was simply playing up to McCain and wanting the second spot on the ballot. He even went so far as to get married so he would look like a stable American man. That didn't work for him either.
how some people still believe that as long as you marry a person of the opposite gender, you're automatically straight.
sigh.
I thought it said that somewhere in the bible. If thou dost marry a person of the opposite sex, thou has then smited the gay thing-a-ma-jig.
or it smite not.
Yes, there is always that possiblity.
married Miss Kitty from Gunsmoke. Both died of AIDS but nobody suggested either contracted it from their marital partner.
I always wondered where she ended up..
Probably got it somehow in the bathroom of the Long Branch.
Miss Kitty run the town brothel anyways?
Yep, upstairs over the Long Branch Saloon. That's one of the first tv shows I remember watching every week. I wanted to be a cow girl when I grew up but alas, I failed.
and according to her NY Times obit, Amanda Blake's official cause of death was oral cancer, but you know how inaccurate those NYT obits are when it comes to CBS personalities.
Blake died on August 16, 1989 at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, California of oral cancer.[3] The exact cause of Blake’s death is unclear. It was widely reported in the news media that she had died of AIDS and had contracted HIV.[5] According to her doctor, Sacramento, California internist Dr. Lou Nishimura, she had throat cancer at the time of her death. Her death certificate, however, listed the immediate cause as cardiopulmonary arrest due to liver failure and CMV hepatitis.
A report by television station KRBK in Sacramento, where Blake was a longtime resident, quoted her friends as saying that her death was related to AIDS. In response to this report, Dr. Nishimura said that Blake had suffered from AIDS symptoms for about a year but that he did not know how she had contracted the disease. She had been married on April 28, 1984 in Austin, Texas to Mark Spaeth (27 July 1939 - 27 May 1985), who died of complications from AIDS. Spaeth and Blake were 45 and 55 years old, respectively, when they got married. She was cremated and her ashes were spread over an animal reserve she helped establish.[6]

representing the "less psycho" wing of the Rethug party, would come out (no pun intended) for the NRA position over the Latino vote. Considering he didn't even need to weigh in on this issue, he sure doesn't seem to know which way the winds are blowing.
Congratulations Justice Sotomayor. Give em Hell.
McCain didn't vote for her because he questioned her qualifications. Oh the irony of that. Palin drags in fish nets and she qualifies to be veep or even pres. But Judge Sotomayor spends most of her life on the bench, but she isn't qualified for the SCOTUS.
You give McLame too much credit - that's just more batshit-crazy-talk from an old coot.
When he blurted out "My Fellow Prisoners" on National TV that was his fatal slip . . .
the only time he told the truth.
I thought when he offed to enter his wife in wet t-shirt contest at a biker rally, thay might have been a little bit over the top.
I think Cindy would probably have more than just a little bit over the top in that contest.
.
The whining about "racism" on conservative blogs only makes this historic moment that much more enjoyable.
Has Limbaugh's head exploded? Is there video?
this weekend with Stephen Harper and Felipe Calderon.

Wow, we are breaking new ground fast. 2009 will become a historical year in at least two repects. With all the shit that's going on, I'm just gonna sit back and be proud of the changes we've made.
the sound of things hitting the ground.
and trying to print up just enough money to cause enough inflation to offset incipient deflation (unnoticed by most) is not a good picture.
